Whispers in the Dark

From: MY DESIRE | By: Yetty

Lena Grant sat in the dimly lit café, nursing her coffee. Her eyes wandered, lost in thought.

Anna Thompson, her best friend, slid into the booth across from her.

"Hey, what's going on?" Anna asked, concern etched on his face.

Lena sighed. "Just feeling lost, Anna. Like there's something missing."

Anna's expression softened. "We'll figure it out together. You're not alone."Lena's gaze drifted to the misty rain outside. "Sometimes I wonder if I'm just searching for something that doesn't exist.

Anna leaned in. "Your passion, your art – it's what drives you. Don't give up."

Lena's eyes locked onto Ethan's. "You always know what to say."

Anna smiled. "That's what friends are for."

Just then, the café door swung open, and a stranger walked in. His piercing eyes scanned the room, locking onto Lena.

Asher Reed.

Lena felt an inexplicable jolt.

"Who's that?" Lena whispered to Anna.

Anna followed her gaze. "No idea, but he's definitely noticed you."

The stranger's eyes never left Lena's.

"Seems like your evening just got interesting," Anna whispered.

Lena's heart skipped a beat.

Asher's gaze lingered on Lena, his eyes burning with intensity. Anna cleared his throat, breaking the spell.

"Earth to Lena," Anna said, chuckling.

Lena's cheeks flushed. "Sorry, what were we discussing?"

Anna grinned. "Your lost soul. But I think it just found its distraction."

Lena playfully rolled her eyes. "Anna, focus."

Asher approached their table, his confident stride commanding attention.

"May I join you?" Asher asked, his deep voice sending shivers down Lena's spine.

Lena hesitated, unsure of this stranger's intentions.

Anna intervened. "Sure, have a seat."

Asher slid into the booth beside Lena, his proximity electrifying.

"I'm Asher," he said, extending his hand.

Lena took it, her touch sparking a jolt.

"I'm Lena," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

Anna introduced herself, breaking the awkward silence.

As they chatted, Lena discovered Asher's passion for art and literature.

"I've never met anyone who shares my love for Whitman's poetry," Asher said, his eyes sparkling.

Lena's heart skipped a beat. "You're speaking my language."

The café's lights flickered, and the rain intensified outside.

"Storm's picking up," Ethan said, glancing out the window.

Asher's gaze locked onto Lena's. "Perfect night for getting lost in conversation."

Lena's pulse quickened.

As the storm raged outside, the café's cozy atmosphere enveloped them. Lena found herself lost in Asher's eyes, their conversation flowing effortlessly.

"You're an artist, Lena?" Asher asked, his interest genuine.

Lena nodded. "Yes, I paint. It's my escape."

Asher smiled. "I'd love to see your work."

Anna chimed in, "She's being modest. Lena's talent is off the charts."

Lena's cheeks flushed. "Anna, stop."

Asher leaned in. "I'd love to hear more about your art."

Lena's passion ignited. "I paint to express emotions, to tell stories."

Asher's eyes sparkled. "That's beautiful."

The café's lights flickered again, and the storm intensified.

"Looks like the storm's getting worse," Anna said, glancing out the window.

Asher stood up. "I should get going. But may I walk you home, Lena?

Lena hesitated, unsure.

Anna intervened. "I'll walk Lena home. You're not from around here, are you?

Asher smiled. "No, but I'll find my way."

As Asher departed, Lena felt an inexplicable pang.

"What just happened?" Lena asked Anna.

Anna chuckled. "You got swept off your feet."

Lena blushed. "Don't be ridiculous."

Anna's expression turned serious. "Lena, be careful. We don't know him."

Lena nodded, her mind whirling.

As they walked home, the storm subsided, leaving an unsettling calm.

As they walked home, Lena's thoughts lingered on Asher.

"Anna, what do you think of him?" Lena asked.

Anna shrugged. "Hard to say. He's mysterious, but seems genuine."

Lena nodded, her mind racing.

They reached Lena's apartment, and Anna bid her goodnight.

"Be careful, Lena," Anna repeated.

Lena smiled. "I will."

As she entered her apartment, Lena felt Asher's presence linger.

She tried to shake off the feeling, focusing on her art.

I But Asher's words echoed: "You're beautiful, Lena. Inside and out."

Lena's cheeks flushed. She hadn't felt this way in years.

The night wore on, Lena's thoughts consumed by Asher.

She drifted off to sleep, his face etched in her mind.
